Facebook Announcement

Today Facebook made a significant announcement: publishers can now publish content to the feeds of all people who liked a specific page. This is a significant step forward in the opening of Facebook Page functionality to the entire web. Also as part of the announcement, Facebook announced a minor, yet significant, upgrade that will convert all iFrame like buttons into share buttons as well.

This is the second step of Facebook providing all pages on the internet with the same tools that all Facebook Pages have. For example, let’s say you “like” this article. I will be able to send a news feed story to all Facebook users who liked that page. The impact of this is significant. Imagine the ability for any object that you like to be able to communicate with you directly through the news feed. In other words, all webpages on the internet immediately have become two-way communication channels.

Additionally, publishers will be able to track how that information was spread through Facebook via the addition of upgraded analytics features. As described in Facebook’s documentation, publishers can add the “ref” attribute to any like button and they will be passed back information about where new visitors came from on Facebook (’home’, ‘profile’, ’search’, or ‘other’). For example, I could add the ref attribute, and then view my Page Insights to find out what percentage of incoming visitors found the page through Facebook Search.

While this is nowhere near the final phase of Facebook’s continued opening of Pages to the web, this is a major step that will help empower publishers even more.

Internet Explorer 9

Google Chrome has been sitting pretty on top of its throne of browser speed and compatibility tests since its release in September 2008, and no one has been able to touch it. Its elegant style and simplistic interface have given it an amazing advantage in the ongoing browser war. Internet Explorer, on the other hand, has become a “thorn in the side” of web developers. From the long and dreadful life of Internet Explorer 6 to the let down of Internet Explorer 8, it has been known to cause headaches, fevers, stomach cramps and fatigue. Its lack of care for compatibility and compliance has made this rebellious old browser feared by many. This may be about to change.

The preliminary test results are in for Internet Explorer 9 and they are impressive. Microsoft has just released their third platform demo and although the scores aren’t as high as they could be, they are definitely better than anything we have seen from Internet Explorer before. It has already passed the CSS3 selectors test with complete compliance and their HTML5 compatibility is almost on par very the rest of the browser greats. Microsoft may have finally gotten back into the ring with Internet Explorer 9. Now if they would just send out a mandatory update for Windows the web developer community could start to relax again. That combined with keeping their product up to date with the latest standards might make Internet Explorer a contender again.

While it still has a ways to go to match the speed and elegance of Chrome, Internet Explorer 9 is shaping up to be a new competitor in today’s brutal browser war.

AGRImag – New Agriculture Business News Magazine

AGRImag is the new agriculture industry magazine for PEI and is the official publication of the PEI Federation of Agriculture. It will replace previous Federation newsletters such as ‘Federation Happenings’ and ‘The United Voice’. This magazine will be delivered four times a year coinciding with the four seasons.

The magazine will make a concerted effort to deliver the message of each of the Federation of Agriculture member organizations, which include the major commodity marketing boards and other specific farm organizations across the Island. By having this message offered in one place, on a consistent basis, it is hoped Island farmers and the non-farming community alike will use it to get a sense of what is happening in the various different Island agriculture sectors. Hopefully, it will offer readers a better understanding of the significant contributions agriculture makes to the Island way of life as seen from the farmers’ point of view.

We hope you enjoy this magazine and welcome any feedback or comments you may have on it. Please contact the Federation of Agriculture office by calling (902) 368-7289 or emailing info@peifa.ca. Please visit the magazine website at www.agrimag.ca to get updates on the information seen in the magazine or to provide your feedback.
