Derwin Clow is rarely parted from his iPhone, which allows him to monitor his dairy herd in the barn. (CBC)
A P.E.I. farmer is using an iPhone app to help him care for his cows.
Derwin Clow had seven cameras installed in his barn in Freetown, east of Summerside, and he can keep an eye on his most valuable assets from pretty much anywhere.
An app on his iPhone allows him to tune into any of the cameras for a live look at his herd.
Inbound marketing is a marketing strategy that focuses on getting found by customers. This sense is related to relationship marketing and the idea of permission marketing. We recommended that marketers “earn their way in” (via publishing helpful information on a blog etc.) in contrast to outbound marketing where they used to have to “buy, beg, or bug their way in” (via paid advertisements, issuing press releases in the hope they get picked up by the trade press, or paying commissioned sales people, respectively).
Traditional marketing (outbound marketing) is a marketing strategy that focuses on finding customers by building brand awareness through advertising and promotion. In contrast to “permission marketing,” a pejorative term for this type of marketing is “interruption marketing.”
To further clarify, Inbound marketing involves getting found by potential customers through search (opposite of Outbound Marketing). The shift from outbound to inbound marketing has led to new mediums of outreach to the public. Outbound marketing, also referred to as “old marketing” or traditional marketing, targets a broad audience using print ads, television ads, telemarketing/cold calls, direct mail/e-mail, etc. Inbound marketing, or “new marketing” and modern marketing, is a response to the recent change in consumer behavior. People are more in control of what information they receive and how. Rather than interrupting people to get their attention with emails, cold calls, commercials, etc. (outbound marketing), inbound marketing relies on the principle that visitors find and come to you. In outbound marketing, the company is in control. Using inbound marketing, the customer is in control.

It seems like most of us have gotten over the “cell phone brain cancer scare”. As a matter of fact, there has been a 5000% increase in data usage (on the AT&T network in the U.S.) over the past three years. This increase in data usage can be partially contributed to the smart phone which uses an average of 30 X the network space of a regular cellphone – an internet stick hogs an average of 1,300 “cellphones” worth of data.
Although this sharp increase in data usage might be causing issues with cell phone providers, tech savvy companies are laughing all the way to the bank while reaching out to consumers through these smart devices. What I’m talking about is the social media phenomenon – Twitter, Facebook, Linked-in, and of course RSS feeds.
And with this increase in data usage perhaps we should all be less worried about brain cancer and more worried about the organs of the lower body. Yet another reason to cut out texting under the table!
Australian physician, Dr. Philip Nitschke, is renowned in his home country for promoting doctor-assisted suicide. In 2002, Dr. Nitschke euthanized four humans in the Northern Territory of Australia when doctor-assisted suicide was legalized for a short period of time. Now Dr. Nitschke is planning a tour to promote the legalization of assisted suicide with stops in Toronto, Vancouver and several U.S. cities. His tour is set to begin on October 7th.
To promote his tour Dr. Nitschke launched an ad campaign which, like the lives of his patients, was cut short. The television ads depict a sick man in pyjamas sitting on his bed, taking stock of the many decisions he’s made in life, from his choice of haircut to his favourite make of car.
“What I didn’t choose is being terminally ill. I didn’t choose to starve to death because eating is like swallowing razor blades. I certainly didn’t choose to watch my family go through it with me. I’ve made my final choice. I just need the government to listen,” the man says before the screen fades to white.
With the help of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition Dr. Nitschke’s ads have gone off the air and gone viral. The growing importance of multimedia which can be broadcast seamlessly across multiple platforms is quite evident.
Do you think such controversial ads as Dr. Nitsche’s, which are taken off of the air gain more publicity and generate more interest than if they were left on the air (especially with the advent of the internet)? Do you think Dr. Nitsche planned this? Do you know of others who have?
